The considerable amount of time we spend working is part of our lives, so it shapes us and we should be able to enjoy it.
And it's also quite fun to reminisce about past work experiences and what has endured in some form to this day.
After a period of intensive travel, I welcomed the opportunity to work exclusively on projects within my own country.
Although for most of my career I have preferred projects with an international dimension, I do remember many nice things from working on local stuff with local people, too.
These memories started to come to me the last time I was running in the woods near to where I live currently. Even in my low-lying town we already got some snow and I realised that I used to run with my then colleagues on exactly the same route (a nice one around Devínska Kobyla, the highest point on the territory of Bratislava). As far as I remember, it was then that, thanks to the pressure of the agreed common runs with them, even though it was still dark at home in the morning and cold outside, I was able to switch to year-round running and not have to struggle to get back into it in the spring after a long break.
Working with colleagues who speak Slovak among themselves meant that after being used to use English terms automatically, I had to learn my native language again. The word nasadiť (deploy) sounded to me much like planting in agriculture.
It was also a rather optimistic period in terms of developments in Slovakia. With the adoption of the euro, we have overtaken even our neighbours. Yes, I remember I had to be on call during that New Year's Eve because I was carrying out a rather risky project of Euro-conversion. Fortunately, everything went smoothly.
The fact that I was at home more often and went jogging more regularly, also contributed to the fact that during this period I got to know my wife. We like to make jokes that we actually never dated, we just ran together.
